Thor was tricked into trying to lift Jörmungandr as a challenge of strength. Thor fails and thus begins the epic rivalry. The two legendary beings, bound by fate, fought to the last day, neither surviving their final battle. Jörmungandr serves as an agent of transformation, being bound and down-trodden by those who try to maintain the status-quo, breaks free and destroys the previous order, to be replaced by something new.
