Jörmungandr the Midgard Serpent, or the World Serpent, is the arch nemesis of Thor, son of Odin. As a younger serpent, Jörmungandr was tossed into the ocean by Odin, and left to drown. Jörmungandr thrived, however, growing into a massive serpent that encircled Midgard. Jörmangundr and Thor first crossed paths when Thor sought rest in the halls of the giant king, Útgarða-Loki. Thor was tricked into trying to lift Jörmungandr as a challenge of strength. Thor fails and thus begins the epic rivalry. The two legendary beings, bound by fate, fought to the last day, neither surviving their final battle. Jörmungandr serves as an agent of transformation, being bound and down-trodden by those who try to maintain the status-quo, breaks free and destroys the previous order, to be replaced by something new.
